Qhamani Bangani
« Rooted in ancestral memory and dream states, I create work that moves between the spiritual and the physical. »
Biography
Qhamani Bangani was born in a village near Butterworth in South Africa’s Eastern Cape and grew up as
the only male in a household of women. Raised by a single mother alongside his sisters, this environment
shaped his sensitivity, sense of protection, and understanding of balance, elements that continue to in-
form his artistic practice. His early years were closely connected to nature, surrounded by oral traditions,
ancestral stories, and spiritual beliefs passed down through generations. After moving to Cape Town
for school, he was exposed early on to social contrasts that left a lasting impression and deepened his
awareness of identity and belonging.
Bangani’s work is rooted in intuition, dreams, and inherited spiritual knowledge. The symbols that appear
in his paintings draw from the stories of his culture, ancestral presence, and lived experience, emerging
not as fixed narratives but as fragments and signs. Through dreams and visions, he receives images
and messages which he translates into intuitive mark-making, symbolic forms, and vibrant colour. His
grandmother, herself an artist who never had the means to pursue her practice, lives on through his work
as a guiding presence. Painting becomes both communication and survival, a way of filtering what he
receives and transforming it into something shared. His work does not seek to explain, but to open space
for reflection, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within it.
